Views of the solo show
Chapelle du quartier Haut, Sète, France

For its first solo exhibition, Île/Mer/Froid took over the monumental space of the Quartier-haut chapel in Sète.

Created during a residency in the city’s studios in the month leading up to the exhibition, Matrice and Épreuves, respectively a concrete slab and a painting, and vast canvases stamped during the painting’s creation, integrate the chapel space, extending its blackened walls and reorganising its perspectives. Around this central gesture, strange bodies dance among the tools and debris of the construction site. Manufactured objects, gleaned during reconnaissance and then petrified in a ferruginous coating oxidised by seawater, give rise to tortuous, undefined forms.

The surfaces are rough and raw, the traces that can be detected on them concretely expressing the gestures that contributed to their creation.

The successive layers form distinct planes, offering a reading in depth.

An ambiguous landscape then appears.
