Le déjeuner sur l'herbe
2017
Performance
16 minutes
As part of Jeune Création, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris, France
This performance was conceived with reference to Edouard Manet’s painting Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe. The lunch takes place on the grass in front of the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery. The main woman is not naked. The men who accompany the woman in Manet’s painting are represented here by a wall, that of the gallery, which evokes its owner, Thaddaeus Ropac. It is in fact Thaddaeus and I having lunch: Thaddaeus Ropac is also present here through the heart I am eating, the weight of which is written on the napkin. Appropriating the ‘greats’ of art history sometimes means overturning established codes and orders.
