Naturisme et Culturisme
2016
8 Drawings
Ink and acrylic on Arche paper
70 x 50 cm each
The title Naturisme et Culturisme (Naturism and Bodybuilding) is loosely based on the concept of ‘Nature and Culture’, often used as an introduction to the discipline of philosophy, and subverts it by adding the suffix ‘ism’. This addition highlights the substitution of the slow and rigorous construction of philosophical thought with the immediacy and ready-made recipes of parapsychology or personal development.
This work looks at the defunct utopias of the second half of the 20th century and re-explores their history with a tone of disenchanted subjectivity, while taking an ironic look at the contemporary practices that have emerged from them.
Thus, the works presented in the exhibition embrace their inclination towards genre, just as there are genres in cinema and literature. A genre whose references are a jumble of rituals, pseudo-science, Latin insults, magic, beliefs, drugs, misunderstandings, pop psychology and lucid dreams.
Research peripheral to this exhibition was shared during its development on a dedicated website.
