Letter to a Barn Owl (2018) is made up of different combinations of domestic objects, mirror plates and plates. The barn owl represented is known as the ghost owl, representing in some cultures the messenger of unspeakable secrets, of the past towards the future and therefore buried tales, marginalised or erased. There is also a Rose of Jericho, a symbol of resurrection but also used in rituals to untie the word, good and prosperity. In the last series of small glass sculptures, Paul Maheke’s 3D laser drawings are engraved with a blend of human and animal representations, which the size reminds talismans. Like incisions, they borrow their style from popular culture and the symbolists, one of whose aims was to make the visible invisible.
