Mon premier cyanotype (et autres épreuves)

2022-2023

Series of photographs
Digital prints based on cyanotype proofs
Variable dimensions

Alongside the precarious, DIY aesthetic of the three-dimensional pieces, another aspect of how we perceive objects is explored in this series, which is more geometric and abstract, as if placing them on a photosensitive surface captured their shadows. Using cyanotype, a process that produces blue prints through exposure to sunlight, I create photograms with the elements around me.
The collection of these prints could evoke a storage panel, such as those found above workbenches, on which the outlines of each tool have been drawn. The resulting series of ‘reversed’ digital prints depicts a somewhat ghostly inventory: after a few digital steps, the shadow of the object that is the subject of the photographic print appears in black and orange (or pink, or sepia) against a grey background.
However, the materiality of the object is reconstructed by that of the paper - through its texture, the marks left by the application of the photosensitive solution, dust or other particles caught on the surface during exposure, the unexpected reaction of the chemicals on the medium, and alterations caused by handling (creases, folds, etc.). This induces the idea of wear and tear and the texture of the object, which is nevertheless imperceptible in the geometry of its cast shadow.
